ADA President Rebecca Reeves’ reception for the members of the House of Delegates

The first thing I did after checking in the day before FNCE started was attend ADA President Rebecca Reeves’ reception for the members of the House of Delegates after the day-long meeting ended.  Well, I crashed the party, hoping to say hello to our state’s delegates, Ane Marie Kis, Marie Kamp and Rita Johnson and professional issues delegate Denice Ferko-Adams. I arrived at the reception a little early, finding that the only person in the room was Becky Reeves herself.  She was gracious and encouraged me to eat the succulent food and bracing coffee.  Soon, we were joined by two of her friends from Houston, Texas as Dr. Reeves works at Baylor University.  I was glad I could fit in by sharing that I earned my masters degree in Public Health at the University of Texas School of Public Health.  Later, I met many members of the ADA Board of Directors, but not our delegates from Pennsylvania.  Still, I met important people to introduce to Cindy Burke and other friends throughout our stay.

Note:  Rebecca Reeves is speaking at our Annual Meeting and Exhibition in King of Prussia on April 27, 2006.  She will be flying in directly from the 4th Asian Congress, Manila, Philippines.  Apparently, the dietetics professionals in the Philippines are quite active in the dietetics profession internationally.

Nutrition in Complimentary Care DPG

Cindy arrived around 10:30 pm and in short order we went to the opulent Grand Bar to see Mary Alice Gettings and members of the Nutrition in Complimentary Care DPG.  It was great to see Mary Alice and quite interesting to meet registered dietitians having a different education than we.  We left at 1 am with nutrition advice for our ailments, fully intending to sleep in, preparing for the long, intense days that lay ahead.

Texas Dietetic Association’s reception for ADA President Rebecca Reeves

After the Opening Ceremony including a Keynote address by actress Jane Seymour, Cindy and I attended the Texas Dietetic Association’s reception for ADA President Rebecca Reeves – in the Renaissance Grand Hotel, naturally.

As I said before, Becky Reeves resides in Houston.  Most of the people attending were Texans.  Cindy and I met two professors from Texas Women’s University in Denton, near Dallas, as we ate our dinner.  Wouldn’t you know I actually resided in Dallas for 15 months helping to drive our conversation.  I met an RD from Alpine, Texas named Jan Sibley.  Too bad my eyes were closed.

From left to right: Caroline Whitby, the recipient of the Pittsburgh Dietetic Association Leadership Development Award, Judy Dodd, Rita Johnson and Susan Dahlheimer of Indiana University of Pennsylvania also attended the reception.  At the Gala, Judy escorted Caroline into the ballroom as part of the awards procession.

PADA Reception for Dr. Ginny Corcoran

Cindy Burke and Dr. Joy Armillay, RD, LDN from Northeast are looking on as Dr. Ginny Corcoran enjoys a gift given by the PADA in recognition of her receiving ADA's Medallion Award, a gift certificate to Talbot's, just in time for a big sale.  The reception was held at the opulent Grand Bar at the Hotel.  The award was given at a breakfast that morning attended by Cindy Burke.  UnderstaJuly 31, 2006; Wouldn't you?

Note:  More about Dr. Corcoran receiving the Medallion Award in the Fall 2005 issue of the state newsletter.

Ginny shows Eileen Chopnick, current President of the Philadelphia Dietetic Association, her gift.  There is more about Eileen at the end of this section.

Idamarie Laquatra and Dr. Geoffrey Greene look on at Ginny’s reception.  The wall decoration behind them shows the attention to detail in the décor of this hotel.

Cindy Burke, Libby Mills, PR CO-Chair and Ginny are still celebrating at the end of the reception.  Libby is from St. Louis.

Kay Bishirjian attended the reception.

“What a nice idea, I did attend the meeting but not all functions.  I think the pictures make us aware of the great opportunity and learning experiences that our association provides for the members each year.  I have been going to ADA Annual meetings for the last 35 years and have found it to be a great learning opportunity, meet colleagues from around the world, and return to

my position with a positive attitude and recharged.”

Paula Leonberger, on the right, hosted Pennsylvania State University’s alumni reception.  Idamarie Laquatra chose a prize from a table and then drew the next winner’s name out of a hat held by Rose Martin, nutrition professor at Penn State.  Ida works for Heinz and has received the Outstanding Dietitian of the Year award and the Keystone Award.  Ida and I were in many classes together at Penn State as we were pursuing our Bachelor of Science degrees in Nutrition.

Mary Alice Gettings selected the next winner from Rose Martin.

The Arch

Other events

There are usually events planned at FNCE to offer attendees an alternative to the Center and Hotel.  This year, on one of the last days of FCNE, members walked to the Gateway to the West Arch.  Pennsylvania and Northeast Pennsylvania Dietetic Association (NEDA) members Maureen Dunne-Touhey and Ann McKenna joined the group at the Arch.

Eileen Chopnick Wins All Expenses-Paid Trip to FNCE 2006 in Hawaii

Eileen Chopnick was happy she attended the 7 am the breakfast held by the Consulting Dietitians in Health Care Facilities (CD-HCF) DPG.   Eileen, current President of the Philadelphia Dietetic Association, won a trip to next year’s FNCE in Hawaii, complements of US Foods, all expenses paid.   “I don't have much detail about my trip but it includes everything.  I am already registered,” reports Eileen.
