You’ve Got a Friend in Pennsylvania

Janet K. Little, MPH, RD, LDN

President-elect, Pennsylvania Dietetic Association

You've got a friend in Pennsylvania:

Marilyn Howell’s "starting over care package" project and

PADA districts program for Hurricane Relief

Aren't you proud of Marilyn Howell's "starting over care package"?  She shipped them to the President-elect of Mississippi, Kathy Warwick, to distribute to RDs in Mississippi affected by Hurrican Katrina.  Cindy and I are really sorry we didn't see you at FNCE, Marilyn!  Thank you to any of you who joined Marilyn's effort.  Our dietetic associations are picking up the hurricane relief effort; NEDA has already started.  Please contact your district president for more information or look at our state website for more information.  Thank you!

After FNCE, Kathy gave the packages to President Karen Lewis to take home to Biloxi and distribute to RDs and students in need of them.  The needs of many of these individuals had only recently been identified.  You can read more information about Kathy Warwick and Marilyn’s effort in an article by PR CO-Chair Libby Mills in the fall issue of our state newsletter.

Diane Douglas, President of Louisiana Dietetic Association, Jan Little, PADA President-elect. After the Future Directions meeting, they discussed PA districts' plans for further relief.  Diane didn't return to her damaged home until ten weeks after the hurricane and the flood waters receded.  Karen now lives in a trailer provided by FEMA as her home was completely damaged by flood waters.

According to Jo Jo Dantone, Louisiana’s ADA Delegate (pictured on the left at the ADAF Gala), has said, the New Orleans Dietetic Association Board planned a meeting on November 14 to discuss "where every is?  That is a very hard subject down here right now.  We cannot locate people.  Still a lot of power is out and phone service is slowing returning.”  Just recently, Jo Jo emailed a questionnaire to LA members to identify their needs and mailing address; ten dietitians had already contacted her when they found out about the “starting over care packages” project from PA.

As most of you know the Pennsylvania Dietetic Association (PADA) took no time at all in developing a way to help those affected by Katrina by putting together Starting Over Care Packages (SOCP).  Some of you have asked what is in the SOCP.  To view information about them, please go to the PA web site at www.eatrightpa.org .

There have also been professional reference materials donated by the Consultant Dietitians in Health Care Facilities Dietetic Practice Group (CDHCF).  These materials consist of various CDHCF publications, such as Pocket Guide for Nutrition Assessment, Pocket Guide for Management, Dietary Documentation, The Consultant Dietitian Newsletter, and many more.

For MS, PADA has already sent packages to many. In LA, it has been very difficult to locate those effected.  But this is changing.  I have received numerous requests for the "Starting Over Care Packages" (SOCP) originated from the PA Dietetic AssociatioJuly 31, 2006ached questionnaire and return it to me and also copy it to Jan Little, PADA President-elect.  Her email is jklrd@fast.net.  I will ship the CDHCF materials, but PA’s district associations will ship the rest to the LA’s president or president-elect.”

If anyone has information about other dietitians who are in need, please forward them this message.
