ADAF Gala First Course

Janet K. Little, MPH, RD, LDN

President-elect, Pennsylvania Dietetic Association

After the Awards Procession, we had the first course.

Baby Green Oak, Red Oak and Frisée Salad,

Cucumber Wrapper, Feta Cheese, Red and Yellow Tomatoes with Tomato Vinaigrette.

Then, Barbara K. Brandt, Chair of the ADAF Board made Welcoming Remarks.  Then, she presented two tributes: ADA Foundation Legacy, Patsyjane O’Malley and ADA Foundation Leader, Susan Finn.

In September 2003 the ADA Foundation established the Patsyjane O’Malley Memorial scholarship through a bequest from Patsyjane’s estate worth more than $275,000, devoted to supporting graduate students in dietetics.  This year, for the first time, five scholarships were awarded from the fund.  Patsyjane’s sister, Peggyann Hutchinson, was seated at our table and was overcome with emotion.

Susan C. Finn has been an involved member of ADA for 32 years.  She recently retired from Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories.  You also may recognize Susan Finn as past speaker of the House of Delegates and as president of ADA.  Last year Susan and her husband Him gave a very generous $100,000 gift to the ADA Foundation’s Research Endowment.  This gift was a major factor in reaching the first $1 million for dietetics research.

After these tributes, we had the main course to the tunes of Lenny Klinger’s Galaxy:

Dual Entrée of Seared Tenderloin Filet with a Merlot Demi-Glaze and

Grilled Grouper with Almond Skordalia,

Chorizo and Almond Risotto Cakes,

Roasted Asparagus and Cherry Tomatoes Accompanied by Carrots and Sauteed Cremini Mushrooms.

Before the montage of scenes of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, this singer with Lenny Klinger's Galaxy performed a stirring, soulful song about New Orleans.

Next Kenneth Wear received a tribute as an ADA Foundation Legend.  An extremely active member of the ADA for 46 years, in 1994, Ken initiated the Kenneth W. Wear Minority Scholarship, an endowment which supports minority or male dietetics students.  This fund has been a major contribution to the continued goal of diversity at ADA. He also became a member of the Evergreen Society this year by pledging $25,000.

Next, the ADAF Gala Dessert
