Career Fair Tips
  • Today’s television and computer oriented society will be much more likely to stop at your booth if you show the Check it out…Careers in Dietetics video or a Power Point presentation. Of course, you will need the proper equipment, but you can often use your laptop or call the career fair sponsors ahead of time to request AV equipment and/or see if an electrical outlet is available.
  • Another way to increase interest is to have an activity that gets people involved. Have a contest: guess the calorie and nutrient content of popular foods, using food models or actual foods, or come up with an activity that will appeal to today’s video game and computer-oriented youth. Check out USDA’s new ‘MyPyramid Blast Off Game™’ at http://www.mypyramid.gov/kids/index.html.
  • People love giveaways and they love food – a perfect combination for promoting careers in dietetics. Take a bushel of bright red apples, or other healthy food, with you to distribute – perhaps a vendor or local restaurant would supply them at no charge.
  • Take one or more professional colleagues with you including both RDs and DTRs, and a dietetics educator, if possible. With a range of experience available, you’ll be better prepared to answer questions or discuss specific interests with students. You also may need coverage for breaks. Consider using local dietetics students and interns to help.
  • Make sure your booth is very attractive. Table skirts, overhead banners, and fresh plants are very eye catching and effective in drawing attention. If funding is a problem, use your creativity. Substitute colored sheets or table cloths for the table skirts. Use posters as backdrops, etc.
  • Use discretion in the distribution of the brochures so they are given to interested students. Make sure students have a contact name, telephone number and e-mail address in case they need more information later.
  • Have those interested fill out an index card so that you can follow-up with them later. This is also a great way to track to see which educational route they chose, and a perfect opportunity to develop a mentoring relationship.
