{"id":6743,"date":"2019-02-27T05:54:28","date_gmt":"2019-02-27T10:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eatrightpa.org\/?p=6743"},"modified":"2021-10-30T03:37:44","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T03:37:44","slug":"plant-based-foods-and-your-childs-dental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.eatrightpa.org\/blog\/2019\/02\/27\/plant-based-foods-and-your-childs-dental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Plant Based Foods and Your Child&#8217;s Dental Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Helen Agresti, RD, LDN<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6753 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.eatrightpa.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/plant-based-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live in a world surrounded by processed convenience food. \u00a0Of course, staying away from sugary foods and drinks is touted to be the best form of action to help keep your child\u2019s teeth cavity free. \u00a0However, whether you are a vegetarian or vegan family, you may be lacking specific vitamins and minerals that your child needs for optimal dental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyourteeth.com\/infobites\/abc\/article\/?abc=n&amp;iid=315&amp;aid=1273\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy of General Dentistry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some vegetarians and most vegans are at an increased risk for vitamins B2 and 12, calcium, and vitamin D deficiency. \u00a0Children and teens who put themselves on vegetarian or vegan diets place themselves at greater risk for deficiencies due to their developing bones and teeth. \u00a0Adults too may be at risk for gum disease when following a vegetarian diet for a long period of time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your family is eating mostly plant-based foods. You should be aware of the acidity levels of certain foods in order to help prevent the demineralization of your child\u2019s teeth. \u00a0Foods that fall below the pH level of 7 are considered to be acidic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/universityhealthnews.com\/daily\/nutrition\/acidic-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colgate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers a list of acidic foods that should be limited or paired with alkaline foods (pH above 7). \u00a0\u00a0Eating a more alkaline food like cheese (regular or vegan) after consuming fruit raises the pH level in your mouth and increases saliva production. \u00a0Therefore, cheese helps neutralize the acidity and protects the enamel of your teeth. Colgate also suggests rinsing your mouth with water after eating fruit and waiting 30 minutes before brushing to help keep the enamel intact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Academy of General Dentistry <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyourteeth.com\/infobites\/abc\/article\/?abc=D&amp;iid=315&amp;aid=11254&amp;_ga=2.167576574.1928272407.1548880334-1791579822.1548615434\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also found that calcium in your saliva helps strengthen and aid in the remineralization of tooth enamel. \u00a0Calcium supports healthy bones, teeth, and gums. It\u2019s also essential for blood clotting and the proper function of your heart, nerves, and muscles. \u00a0Vegans especially should be supplementing with leafy greens, beans, as well as fortified soy and nut milks. Below are a few examples of high calcium plant-based foods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>High Calcium Legumes:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney Beans<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chickpeas<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baked Beans<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navy Beans<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>High Calcium Vegetables:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Broccoli<\/p>\n<p>Kale<\/p>\n<p>Okra<\/p>\n<p>Bok choy<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bones.nih.gov\/health-info\/bone\/bone-health\/nutrition\/calcium-and-vitamin-d-important-every-age\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for calcium recommendations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium and phosphorous for healthy development of your bones and teeth. Exposure to the sun, diet, and taking supplements are your three options to getting adequate vitamin D. \u00a0The combination of diet and supplements are typically the most effective ways to meet the requirements of this essential nutrient.
