What Do the PADA and Pennsylvania Turnpike Service Plaza Farmer’s Markets Have in Common?
By Janet K. Little, MPH, RD, LDN, President-elect PADA
Our cookbook, Soup & Ladle Favorites and PA produce are available for sale this year at two of the busiest Turnpike Plazas Farmer’s Markets, located at the Lehigh Valley exit and the Valley Forge Service Plaza near Wayne. Did you know that 4 out of the 21 service plazas on the PA Turnpike offer farmers markets? The remaining two are at the New Stanton and the Sideling Hill Service Plazas both located in western PA.
With the PADA Foundation’s administration of the Make Time for Health grant from the Attorney General and our cookbook, Soup & Ladle Favorites, the Pennsylvania Dietetic Association and Foundation is in a unique position to join the Department of Agriculture promoting consumers’ consumption of fruits and vegetables. Also, the Lehigh Valley Dietetic Association sold 50 cookbooks in one afternoon at the Emmaus Farmers Market. One taste of Chicken Taco Soup and customers wanted to know where to buy the cookbook.
With this in mind, State Farmers Market Representative Ronald Walker of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture gained permission for vendors at the Lehigh Valley and Valley Forge farmers markets to sell our cookbook from May through September for $14.95 including tax. A big “Thank You” to Mr. Walker for this support.

Jaime and Kelly Haas work at their family's stand at the Allentown Farmer's Market as well as the Valley Forge turnpike Service Plazas on weekdays and weekends. The Haas family farm is located in Orefield, Lehigh County." |

Customers notice the flyer as they enter the market and approach Tom about the cookbooks. Tom sells his produce and our cookbook on weekends. During the work week, Tom works at Air Products. Last spring, he joined a Shape Up, PA team, "Waistin' Away". Team members were pleased with their results. |
