RD Practice Exam CD-ROM
www.visualveggies.com
I am a new RD since December of 2004. I completed my masters degree in May of this year. And, I began this small part-time business of selling a new study tool computer program I created in the last months of my internship. This has helped me study for the exam, and has helped many students across the nation also successfully pass. The product is called the RD Practice Exam CD-ROM. I would be happy in assisting other students to learn more about my business venture, and hopefully spark some interest for them to begin a business as well!
Why did you start your own business?
It all started with an idea, followed by a brainstorm, and then the creativity let loose. I wanted to put my computer knowledge to the test and learn a new language - computer programming.
Do you work alone or with a group or partner?
I work alone. I created the product, advertised the product, packaged and shipped the item(s), and maintain the website.
What classes did you take?
For my degree:
I always have enjoyed my science classes even back to high school. But my initial venture to college was to Penn State for a major in Physical Therapy. This lasted 2 years, with completing only core classes. My next venture was an undeclared major route to a community college nearby called Luzerne County Community College where I earned an Associate of Science degree after a year of schooling. Then I decided on Marywood's program for a Bachelors in Nutrition Science degree . I completed this degree in 3 years, followed by a Masters of Science in Sports Nutrition & Exercise Science.
For the program:
I only took nutrition classes in order to develop the nutrition questions in the program's database. I taught myself the programming language, called .NET (dot NET). Then, utilizing the Microsoft product, Visual Basic .NET and reading countless books on programming, I was able create my first nutrition program.
Where did you work first?
I still maintain a full-time job as a clinical dietitian at Allied Skilled Nursing Facility in Scranton, PA.
What support did you receive form ADA in terms of benefits as you aren't working for anyone else and receiving benefits. (health insurance, life insurance, malpractice insurance, loans, scholarships, awards, if any)?
None, as I find benefits another way - in my case, I work a full-time job to receive benefits and maintain experience (besides, a guaranteed income), and the business is only part-time and a supplemental income.
Would you recommend working for yourself? Why?
I would recommend working for yourself because of the freedom to set the amount of income you receive by the amount of work you put into it. However, as I work full-time and enjoy a salary and benefits, the business is only part-time and a supplemental income.
And, anything else you can think of.
Be unique, find your niche, and let your creative mind take off!
