Make Time for Health- Strong Bones

How to Create a Make Time for Health - Bone Health Workshop

Step 1   Study the materials, handouts & power point

Step 2   Contact your school district

Step 3   Preparation for the workshop

Step 4   Conducting the workshop

Step 5   Wrap up

Step 6   How to get paid

Step 1   Study the materials, handouts and power point

Download the power point and attachments. Review these before contacting your school and be familiar with the materials and programs objectives. (Read Program background info and objectives)

Step 2   Contact your school district

1) Approach your targeted school or community center about a workshop presentation with the following information.  These various marketing tools are examples which can be re-worded to meet the needs of your school or association.

2) How to partner with the school in setting up a successful presentation.

3) We found the school nurse within the elementary or middle school is generally in charge of or initiates parent health education programs. In fact, when contacted, were very excited to partner with a nutrition professional.

Step 3  Preparation for the workshop

Participant Handouts

  1. Sign in sheet
  2. A blank “strategies …” form for participant note taking.
  3. Evaluation form.
  4. Recipes samples (edamane)
  5. Menu day example of Calcium Rich foods
  6. We have obtained copies from DOH called “Got Calcium?” as well as an ADA support sheet on calcium. Contact the PADA business office and they will mail you a set of copies.

The day of the program/Setting up the Room

  • Classroom style appears best but a cafeteria or auditorium works as well.
  • Podium and microphone.
  • Screen for power point; stand or table for projector. (Test ahead of time!)

.

Set up 1 ( or 3)  eight foot tables

  • Table one- registration table- sign in sheet; (include a basket for tickets if chancing off items); the handout “strategies…,” and the  evaluation form
  • Table 2 and 3 - food table if food is being served.

Display (optional)

  • Colorful fruits and vegetables in a basket such as apple, small red cabbage, green onions, small purple eggplant, oranges, purple grapes, banana , red pepper. Find produce that represents the 5 major color groups)
  • Sources of calcium-rich foods.

Step 4  Conducting the workshop

Power point presentation

E-mail Pat Sullivan for a copy of the power point presentation. (You will need power point on your computer). This is a copy write product of PADAF. This power point includes “talking points” and “reference points” within the notes pages of the power point. This program will take 45 minutes to complete.

Step 5    Wrap up

If there are door prizes these would be chanced off at this time.

We found that it was best to give out handouts after the presentation. If the evaluations are being used, these are collected as the participant hands over the evaluation.

Step 6   How to get paid

The PA Department of Health has awarded us funds to pay for 20 programs in the school year 2006- 2007. Once you have contacted your school (or community) and set a date, contact Pat Sullivan for instructions how to file the results of the program and how to receive the honorarium. We will pay an honorarium (or stipend) of $150.00.

Once the 20 programs have been scheduled, and the funds exhausted, you can apply for a PADA community grant stipend through the PADA website. PADA also pays an honorarium (or stipend) of $150.00 for conducting  a community program.

or

Many school districts have a budget for this and when discussing this program ask if there are stipend dollars available.
