How to Create a Make Time for Health Workshop

Step 1. Study the materials, handouts and power point.

Download the power point and all attachments within this document. Review these before contacting your school and be familiar with the materials and programs objectives.

Step 2. Contact your school district

1) Approach your targeted school about a workshop presentation with the following information.

2) How to partner with the school in setting up a successful presentation.

  • Download the handouts and dialogue with your contact about which ones they would like to copy and use with their participants. The school will be responsible for copying handouts.
  • Share a sample flyer (click here).
  • Share a sample newspaper release (click here).
  • Discuss the successful marketing strategies with your contact.
  • Discuss what community resources your school would like you to incorporate into your presentation. (such as walking and biking trails or a farmers market).

3) We found the school nurse within the elementary or middle school is generally in charge of or initiates parent health education programs. In fact, when contacted, were very excited to partner with a registered dietitian (or diet technician).

Step 3. Preparation for the workshop

Before the Program

Purchase

A variety of fresh fruit and vegetable samples arranged in a wicker basket. (We found this was an inexpensive way to stress the importance of more produce daily.) We also chanced off this basket at the end of the program.

Start collecting

Food and package label demos such as;

  • Healthy cereal box – high fiber/ low sugar
  • unhealthy cereal choices
  • 100% fruit juice and high sugar fruit beverages
  • Carton of skim or low fat milk and whole milk
  • Whole grain bread package and white bread package
  • Natural peanut butter and other peanut butter product
  • 20oz. soda/ regular sugar and diet soda.
  • Various snack food labels; some healthy, some with hydrogenated fats or high sugar.
  • Breakfast bars; unhealthy and healthy.
  • Trail mix (package of 4-6 servings)
  • Sugar packets

(We accumulated 40 - 75 food labels and had these available in a basket at the sign in table. When participants registered at the table, we suggested each participant take a label. (This set up anticipation and allows the speaker to continually refer to possible labels that the audience was holding).

  • Sample of a 20oz cola soda. Sugar packets. (see how to use these in the program outline below as well as the notes page of the power point)
  • Sample of the food pyramid. (I had a very large poster).
  • Sample of some cookbooks like the Soup and Ladle cookbook.
  • Sample of a pre cut salad fixings/organic if possible and a healthy bottled salad dressing choice (I used Paul Newman’s brand).
  • Measuring cups especially ½ cup.
  • 6 oz. juice glass
  • Create a tape of lively music for a stretch break -bring a tape recorder.

Participant Handouts (Optional)

The day of the program/Setting up the Room

  • Classroom style appears best but a cafeteria or auditorium works as well.
  • Podium and microphone.
  • Screen for power point; stand or table for projector. (Test ahead of time!)

.

Set up 3 eight foot tables (5 if food is included)

  • Table one- registration table- sign in sheet; (include a basket for tickets if chancing off items); the handout “strategies…, evaluation form
  • Table 2 and Three - along either side of the podium with examples and props to be used during your presentation as well as the group of handouts
  • Table 4 and 5 - food table if needed.

Display a fruits and vegetable basket  (near the podium)

Colorful fruits and vegetables for the basket such as apple, small red cabbage, green onions, small purple eggplant, oranges, purple grapes, banana , red pepper. Find produce that represents the 5 major color groups.

Step 4. Conducting the Workshop

Activities with participants described in the program outline

  • Name the commercials” activity- (chalk board or flip chart works).
  • Food demo (optional- the soup recipe was a popular demo product)
  • Food supply for taste testing (see shopping list document above)
  • Soda demo- 20 oz soda example with 17 sugar packet taped together (represents 65 grams sugar)
  • Food Labels
  • Stretch in place (provide lively music

PowerPoint presentation

Download Presentation (downloadable PowerPoint file)

If you have an issue with the download, e-mail Pat Sullivan for a copy of the power point presentation. (You will need PowerPoint on your computer to operate).

This is a copyright product of PADAF. This power point includes “talking points” and “reference points” within the notes pages of the power point.

This program will take 1 hour 45 minutes to complete. If you do a food demo, it will take 2 hours. There is one 5 minute break incorporated into these times. Break should be stand up and stretch only/otherwise it will take longer than 5 minutes.

Step 5. Wrap up

If there are door prizes these would be chanced off at this time.

We found that it was best to give out handouts after the presentation. If the evaluations are being used, these are collected as the participant hands over the evaluation.
