Stress three themes throughout

-Following the guidelines for Americans is about healthier lifestyle choices and more activity (Not dieting).

-Small changes can result in significant benefits.

-Plan daily activities for your self and your children.

 

Warm up

Discuss format, evaluation form; hand outs, etc. before beginning.

10 minutes

 

Decide as a group the percentage of healthy vs. empty calorie commercials.

(Core learning #1)

Ask the audience to name food/drink commercials and list them on a board.

Stop at 10. Most answers (60% or higher) will be empty calorie foods)

Point this out.        

 

Interactive activity

I had children in the audience participate and 1 volunteer wrote them on a flip chart. We came up with only 40% commercials that were “healthy”

 Childhood Obesity can set the stage for an overweight adult with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Break-the fast-

What does it mean?

Discussion of nutrition and school performance/the importance of breakfast

Participants will understand the importance of breakfast for brain power- to provide protein, calcium, fiber and energy.

Child’s performance in school starts with a healthy breakfast.

Healthy breakfast defined as a good protein source, fiber choices, and energy food choices.

(Core objective #1)               

Interactive: asked who has the cereal labels or breakfast bars labels.

Show the difference between fiber and no fiber.

Discuss varying levels of added sugar.

Introduce discussion of partially hydrogenated fats in breakfast bars.

Called for a 5 minute stretch break

Stopped at the last breakfast slide

Have participants stay in their seats and “stretch”. You may want to play “lively” music for 1 minute.

30 minutes

Nutrition

 -How to increase fruit & vegetables intake

-Supper does not have to high fat fast food

-Fluids at mealtime do count as calories/a chance for weight loss or management

-Portion sizes do count

Meals can be quick yet nutritious.

Importance of daily fiber and nutrients- found in fresh fruit/vegetables.

Eat with your children-no distractions at meals such as TY or video games.

Slow down the rate of eating to fill full.

Empty calorie fluids at meals can contribute to weight gain (sodas and juices).

 

Hidden/extra calories when eating out.

Healthier choices at fast food restaurants.

(Core objective #1)

Start back with summary of breakfast then proceed with a short discussion on snack and lunch ideas.

Start dinner section with display of salad mix and a healthy salad dressing as a quick appetizer for the family before meal preparation.

Refer to colorful fruit and vegetable display. (refer to the basket when discussing the 5 color groups)

Interactive- have discussion around packaging- mention - portion sizes- % of fat, calories.

How to read a food label

How to read a food label- identify hidden fat, hidden sugar.

Read labels and understand key nutrition

(Core objective #1)

Snack food samples – asked those who have these foods to read out serving sizes and or calories or fats or sugar.

Show 20 oz. soda and its corresponding # of sugar packets- discuss how to translate grams of sugar divided by 4 = #of teaspoons or 1 sugar packet.
