What attracted you to the field of dietetics?

Dietetics is a second career for me.  I have a Bachelor’s degree is Political Science and a concentration in Women’s Studies.  I worked in politics and public relations for six years after college before deciding to switch fields.  Dietetics provided me with the opportunity to work directly with people in a health care setting.  I also have a long-time personal interested in nutrition, fitness and preventative medicine.  Additionaly, I was attracted to the academic nature of the field.  As a clinician, I enjoy being able to access scientific literature and current research studies/findings.

How did you become a dietitian?

I started out by taking evening classes at a community college while working in public relations full-time.  Eventually, I went back to school full-time to complete my didactic work.  With little background in nutrition, this took approximately three years.  After finishing my coursework at Drexel University in Philadelphia, I was accepted into the Sodexho Philadelphia/New Jersey Dietetic Internship.

How do you like your first job? How do you like your current job?

My current job is actually my first job.  After finishing my Dietetic Internship in 2005, I have been working for Sodexho as an in-patient Clinical Dietitian at a hospital in Center City Philadelphia.   I work with an inner-city population and provide nutrition assessment and medical nutrition therapy to patients with diabetes, renal disease, cancer and gastro-intestinal disorders.  I also enjoy working at the acute-care level at a teaching hospital where I feel like I continue to learn and advance as a clinician.

Taking on the challenge of a career change into dietetics has not been the easiest road, but I find the work that I do very rewarding.  It was worth the haul!
