How do students apply to the college or university participating in the Consortium
Students would apply directly to the college or university of their choice listed in the Consortium Coordinated Program (Gannon University, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, or Mercyhurst
College) for a bachelor's degree from their home institution. In the sophomore year, they would apply for admissions into the Consortium Coordinated Program in general dietetics. They would complete the Standards of Education required by CADE and receive a Verification Statement attesting to this fact. Their bachelor's degree from their home institution plus the Consortium CP Verification Statement will allow the graduate to sit for the registration examination to become a RD.
What are the advantages of the consortium approach to becoming a RD?
The advantages are that they complete both the didactic and supervisory practice experience within four years (not five years). A second advantage is that they can select the type of school they prefer (a state institution, a larger Catholic institution, or a smaller Catholic institution) to call home while completing course work together in the junior and senior year as a part of
The Consortium. They reap the benefit of the triple expansion of the faculty, facilities, and student body in the junior and senior year while paying the tuition of their home school. It is cost effective for the institution's administrators to operate the Consortium Coordinated Program because the CCP budget is divided into three budgets. The three institutions provide facilities for classes within the city limits of Erie, so travel is minimal for the students since many of them reside locally within the city of Erie.
