From one science field to another...
I've been fascinated by the idea of science since I was a little kid!
I often preserved lizards until they became skeletons, watched leaves burn and yes, I burned myself many times.
I got attracted to computer sciences as I was growing up. I loved the idea that it's a field that allows blending science, arts, and (umm) programming. I had a need to engage my right brain and practice my artistic skills. As I was studying at Drexel, I was working as a graphic designer/web designer for VAC Motorsports, a BMW race car shop.
Two years in my career, I decided to take a second nutrition elective class. After all, I loved science, and I wanted to know what happens to the food that we eat and how it changes to other nifty little things. I only lasted a few weeks, before I made the turning decision in my life. I love nutrition and the physiology of the body's metabolism. With the help of my favorite teacher and friend, Liz Emery, I made the transition and took the leap.
Currently I am a dietetic intern at Immaculata University completing my clinical rotation at Temple University Hospital. It is a wonderful experience. I am currently applying for clinical hospital jobs in the area, but the opportunities in other directions are numerous. As a clinician in a hospital I get to do those three major things:
- Assess patients and determine if they are at nutritional risk
- Recommend diets that can save people's lives
- Understand the food/disease connection and becoming a "food doctor."
Other opportunities that I think of, maybe later down in my career are private counseling, food service director, nutrigenomics, and nutraceuticals. Going into Nutrition products sales and becoming a strength sports nutritionist are also possibilities. The field of dietetics is very broad and welcomes people of very different backgrounds and goals. Today, I still practice my hobbies in arts and bodybuilding while pursuing a career in my true passion, nutrition.
Oh, and expect to get bright smiles from curious strangers in social events as you introduce yourself as a nutritionist. You are a center of interest!
