I’ve been a Dietetic Technician, Registered for 20 plus years and received my training at the Williamsport Area Community College (now the Pennsylvania College of Technology), receiving an Associates Degree in Applied Science in their Dietetic Technician Program. I started my career at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center in Reading, PA, working in both the clinical and management areas. My experience there included working with patients with a wide range of diagnoses, including heart disease, cancer, eating disorders, and diabetes. I can also remember working with some of the first AIDS patients when not much was known about the virus yet.
The above experience allowed me to jump into sales, working for a manufacturer specializing in therapeutic puree foods. I was their regional manager in the New York City area for 4 years and was their “MVP” and “Highest Total Dollar Sales” recipient.
Most recently, I have been working in Northwestern PA as the Tobacco Cessation Coordinator for Crawford County. I also counsel provide nutrition education for pregnant and parenting teens participating in a program to finish high school. My experience and training as a DTR has prepared me for these transitions. I am also very active with my state and national association, holding elected positions which allow me to make a difference in my profession.
I have never felt limited as a DTR and have worked closely with other nutrition professionals to fulfill all of my career goals. I continue to expand my horizons, most recently becoming certified in Adult Weight Management and hope to assist in developing a program that will combat this problem in my own community. I also hope to fulfill my other goal of including DTRs in our state licensure law and assisting DTRs in other states to do the same.
