As a die-hard sports fan, it\u2019s one of my favorite days of the year and I\u2019ve had the pleasure of witnessing my team (the Steelers) win twice in my lifetime. While your team can\u2019t win every year you can at least enjoy delicious food.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical Super Bowl party food includes: chicken wings, sliders, chili, pigs in a blanket, and my favorite- a wide variety of dips. Being a dietitian I always try to bring a dip that is nutritious and delicious. I\u2019m sharing some tips that can make your dip healthier without cutting the flavor plus my recipe for an award winning dip. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Add beans<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pureed beans make the dip super creamy while adding protein and fiber to make it more filling. I guarantee most party goers won\u2019t even taste the beans.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Sneak in veggies<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time people aren\u2019t looking for veggies in their cheesy dip so it\u2019s easy to mix in a few finely chopped ones- adding in vitamins and minerals.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Create texture through toppings<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dips tend to be mostly thick and not super eye appealing. By sprinkling some green onion or tomatoes on the top you\u2019re adding more nutrients and making the dip look more appetizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Spice it up by adding heat \u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I\u2019m not a huge spicy fan (mild salsa is as hot as it gets) many people love heat- the hotter the better. Chopped jalape\u00f1o, salsa, and hot sauce can be utilized to add spiciness to your dip. Cumin and paprika can add a peppery aroma and flavor as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of my favorite nutrition hacks- substituting Greek yogurt for sour cream. I use this all the time for Mexican food and it works perfectly in a dip, especially when combined with other ingredients. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Choose \u00a0lean protein<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your tip isn\u2019t vegetarian and you plan on using meat, go for shredded chicken over ground beef. \u00a0There are multiple heart healthy benefits for choosing lean proteins. <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have any tips or tricks for making a healthier dip? Make sure you check out my recipe utilizing all my tips!<\/span> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"598\" height=\"427\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1264\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.eatrightpa.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/cheeseskilletdip-final.jpg\" alt=\"How To Built a Healthy Dip | EatRightPA\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chicken Cheddar Dip <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Ingredients:<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 (15 oz can) white beans, pureed<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 (16 oz) jar salsa verde<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 (5.3 oz cup) plain Greek yogurt<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 red peppers, chopped<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1\u00bd \u00a0cup corn (I used frozen) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 cups chicken, cooked and shredded<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1\u00bd cups shredded cheddar cheese<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 tsp cumin<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optional: tomatoes and green onion for topping<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Directions:<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preheat oven to 350 F.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combine bean puree, salsa verde, and Greek yogurt in a large bowl, mix thoroughly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stir in peppers, corn, chicken, and cheese (optional: Save some cheese for topping.)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add cumin and make sure everything is evenly mixed.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transfer to cask iron skillet or baking pan.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bake for 20-25 minutes until cheese is melted.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After removing from oven, add green onion and tomato topping if using.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serve hot with tortilla chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Jess DeGore, RD is based in Philadelphia and specializes in nutrition counseling, brand and business consulting and corporate wellness.
