And, according to the National Survey of Family Growth, 12.7 % of females aged 18 to 44 have impaired fecundity (the biological ability to bear children that we typically refer to as fertility).<\/p>\n<p>With those statistics, I say that anything we can do to improve the odds, the better. The government agrees and has a few goals related to preconception in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthypeople.gov\/2020\/topics-objectives\/topic\/maternal-infant-and-child-health\/objectives\">Healthy People 2020<\/a> that we can learn from:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goal:<\/strong> Increase the proportion of women of childbearing potential with intake of at least 400 micrograms of folic acid from fortified foods or dietary supplements.<br \/>\n<strong>Action:<\/strong> Consumer adequate folate!<br \/>\n<strong>Resources:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Folate-Consumer\/\">Office of Dietary Supplements Info &#8211; Folate<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Goal:<\/strong> Reduce the proportion of woman of childbearing potential that have lower red blood cell folate concentrations.<br \/>\n<strong>Action:<\/strong> Consume adequate iron!<br \/>\n<strong>Resources:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Iron-Consumer\/\">Office of Dietary Supplements Info &#8211; Iron<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Goal:<\/strong> Increase the proportion of women delivering a live birth who had a healthy weight prior to pregnancy<br \/>\n<strong>Action:<\/strong> Lose weight if overweight and gain weight if underweight!<br \/>\n<strong>Resources:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/MyPlate-Daily-Checklist\">MyPlate Calorie Checklist<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Additional factors related to impaired fertility in women (and men) that registered dietitian nutritionists can help clients address:<\/p>\n<p>\uf071 Weight loss &gt;15% of normal weight<br \/>\n\uf071 Negative energy balance<br \/>\n\uf071 Inadequate or Excessive body fat<br \/>\n\uf071 Extreme levels of exercise<br \/>\n\uf071 High alcohol intake<br \/>\n\uf071 Endocrine disorder<br \/>\n\uf071 Celiac disease<br \/>\n\uf071 Severe stress<br \/>\n\uf071 Diabetes<br \/>\n\uf071 Inadequate zinc status<br \/>\n\uf071 Inadequate antioxidant status<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5031\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.eatrightpa.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Fertility-Foods-Cookbook-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fertility Foods Cookbook\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A friend of mine has written a cookbook that is more like a self-help guide addressing this very topic: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahaasrdn.com\/fertility-foods-cookbook\/\">Fertility\u00a0Foods Cookbook\u00a0<\/a>by Elizabeth Shaw,\u00a0MS, RDN and Chef Sara Haas, RDN.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-5027\" src=\"http:\/\/dev.eatrightpa.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Caroline-Passerrello-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Caroline Passerrello MS, RDN\" \/><br \/>\nCaroline is a Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carolinewestllc.com\/\">Caroline West, LLC<\/a> and the Past President of the Pittsburgh Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
