That\u2019s because it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health-topics\/education-and-awareness\/heart-month\/wear-red-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Wear Red Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a day designed to raise awareness of the fact that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/docs\/WearRedPoster_2018_508.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease remains the leading case of death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among Americans\u2014including women. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Wear Red Day helps to kick off a celebration of heart health known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health-topics\/education-and-awareness\/heart-month\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute teams up with other organizations such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AHA) to host events across the country and offer resources that empower individuals to take control of their heart health. The biggest takeaway from American Heart Month is this: heart disease may be deadly, but it\u2019s largely preventable with a healthy lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To combat heart disease, the AHA encourages everyone to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/nutrition-basics\/aha-diet-and-lifestyle-recommendations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enjoy a varied and colorful diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including ample amounts of fresh fruits and veggies, lean proteins, and fiber-rich whole grains. They also tout the importance of limiting sugar, saturated and trans fats, and sodium in order to keep your heart healthy. In addition to embracing a nutritious diet, the experts also suggest you skip the tobacco\u2014as it can increase your risk of heart disease\u2014and that you get active for at least 150 minutes a week (or 75 minutes if it\u2019s vigorous exercise).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you missed Wear Red Day, it\u2019s not too late to celebrate American Heart Month! In fact, with Valentine\u2019s Day tomorrow, there\u2019s no better time to show your ticker some love. Start by committing to the AHA\u2019s guidelines and making one or two tweaks to your daily routine as a result\u2014or encouraging a friend or family member to take on the challenge. One simple step you can take is making <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recipes.heart.org\/en\/recipes\/turkey-chili\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this heart-healthy turkey chili recipe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the AHA.
